About This Place

Doña Azucena is a standout Salvadoran restaurant nestled in Stafford, VA, bringing a genuine taste of El Salvador right to your neighborhood. Located conveniently at 60 Susa Dr, this cozy eatery invites guests to savor traditional Salvadoran flavors, masterfully prepared and served in an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the warm smiles of attentive staff who make you feel like part of the family.

The heart of Doña Azucena’s menu lies in its iconic pupusas, particularly the Pupusas Revueltas — a perfect harmony of savory chicken, pork, and beans melded into a delicately handmade corn tortilla. Customers rave that these pupusas aren’t greasy, just perfectly balanced with fresh, wholesome ingredients that melt in your mouth. Complement these with their creamy and richly flavored Quesadilla or the irresistibly crispy Plantanos Fritos, sweet and tender fried plantain slices that evoke the comfort of home cooking.

Venture beyond pupusas, and you’ll uncover a treasure trove of authentic dishes like the Tilapia Frita, a beautifully fried tilapia served alongside fluffy rice, crisp salad, and homemade tortillas — a comforting and satisfying plate priced attractively at only $10.00. The Pechuga de Pollo Encebollada is another highlight, featuring tender chicken breast gently cooked with sweet onions, offering a simple but memorable taste of Salvadoran home-cooking traditions.

Don’t miss their classic Nuegados con Chilate, delightful deep-fried cassava bites drizzled with sugar cane syrup, paired with a comforting bowl of cornflour porridge — a perfect dessert or snack that captures the sweet, earthy flavors of the region. For a true Salvadoran appetizer experience, try the Pasteles de Carne, crispy fried patties stuffed with savory beef and mixed vegetables, or indulge in the crispy, golden Chicharron, fried pork with a perfect crunch.

The atmosphere at Doña Azucena is relaxed and friendly, creating the ideal setting for a casual family meal or a flavorful solo lunch. Evening visits find the restaurant calm but inviting, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a busy day without the fuss of long waits. Patrons frequently mention the hospitality as much as the food, with staff who are quick to serve and eager to share their passion for Salvadoran cuisine.

Whether you’re discovering pupusas for the first time or seeking an authentic taste of El Salvador while in Stafford, Doña Azucena delivers with every bite. Its affordability, combined with genuine, homey flavors and a warm, welcoming vibe, make it a local gem and a go-to dining destination praised by regulars and newcomers alike.

But pupusas in town. Pupusas are not greasy at all and the people there are so nice. We went at night and it was very affordable

Great little place. The plantains with breakfast were delicious and I could easily eat a dozen tortillas and then hate myself for the rest of the day. Had the typical breakfast with the eggs ranchero style and added a lengua taco.

Came in around 9:30pm on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy. There was a large party but besides that, it was empty. Their pupusas are pretty cheap, around 1.50-$2 a piece. I got the chicken, pork, and everything and it was good. They were fast with the food so I didn't have to wait too long.

It is my go to place and mostly since it is the only Salvadoran restaurant in Stafford. The food is delicious. I have never had a bad experience with food or service. I definitely recommend it!

So far, this is one of the best Doña Azucena's restaurant we have visited, the food is always tasty, specially the Pupusas and the Grilled Chicken Breast. Five stars for the best homemade Horchata drink! The atmosphere is a bit crowded sometimes but quiet enough to enjoy a good dinner.
